July - November

From late July to early November, Hervey Bay has become famous as the playground of the majestic humpback whales on their return to the Antarctic when the whales frolic in the warm waters of the bay. Don't leave it too late... book now!

Monthly Jazz Club Gig

Hervey Bay Jazz Club meets on the last Friday of each month at the Hervey Bay Boat Club except where otherwise advertised. They present local and out of town musicians of a high professional standard. Sundays in the Park Hervey Bay Council for the Arts presents 'Sunday in the Park' at Scarness Stage on the 4th Sunday of every month . Each month will feature bands, dancers and musicians for all ages from 1 PM - 3 PM. BYO Food, chairs or blanket to sit on.

Every March - Fraser Coast Cultural Festival

The Fraser Coast Cultural Festival usually starts with a Parade of Nations at 10 AM, with performers and local groups in costume, intermingled with local bands. After the opening ceremony by local dignitaries and consuls of some of the countries represented, performances will start at 11 AM and go on until 5:30 PM. There are cultural performances on two stages, children's stage and a band stage as well as roving performers. High quality cultural performers come from all over Australia intermingled with local talent. The Children's stage will have entertainment for children of all ages, including local schools. There will be an International food-court and other food and craft stalls.

June - Paddle Out for Whales

The majestic Humpback Whale is likely to have been visiting the Fraser Coast Region from around 20,000 years ago. This fascinating creature has harmoniously swam in the world's oceans for over 23 million years and now many man-made impacts such as whaling, climate change and ship strikes threaten their existence. National Whale Day is held annually in the whale watch capital, Hervey Bay, raising awareness of these amazing creatures. July 2012 - Return of the Whales - Launch of the Hervey Bay Whale Watching Season View the whale boats at the Marina. Live music, wine and seafood sampling, face painting, balloons and Whale Trail Competition. Whale Watching passes to be won. Date to be confirmed.

First week of August - Hervey Bay Whale Festival

It's 40 Tonne of Fun

The whale watching capital of the world will come alive with 12 hours of non-stop celebration rolled into three events, the Illuminated Street Parade, McDonalds Kid's Festival, and the LIVE Whale Aid Concert.

Join in the experience of discovery through the Hervey Bay Whale Festival's program and help celebrate our love of the Humpback Whale. Come and see first-hand how Hervey Bay can put on a show!

'Whale of a Time' - McDonalds Kid's Festival at Seafront Oval with stalls, rides, food and beverages, roving performers and stage entertainment. Bring along your folding chair and enjoy the spectacle of the Illuminated Street Parade later in the afternoon, featuring dazzling floats created by community organisations set to bring the Hervey Bay foreshore to life.

The evening concludes with a Live Whale Aid concert featuring a line-up of talented Australian musicians with a strong focus on raising funds for whale conservation. An exciting fireworks display will complete the celebrations.

Second week of August - Fraser Lions Hervey Bay Seafood Festival

The Hervey Bay Seafood Festival celebrates the fabulous local seafood harvested from the waters of the Fraser Coast. Enjoy a family atmosphere with stalls, demonstrations, hot and cold seafood. For something special be at the Tastes of the Bay Celebrity Chef seafood lunch.

Admission fee applies and the Festival opens at 10 AM and concludes at approx 4 PM.

Family

Hervey Bay is ideal for a family holiday. With 18kms of Esplanade to walk or cycle, numerous safe sand beaches to enjoy and covered BBQ areas by the beach, there is plenty to keep the whole family busy. Take in a movie at the cinema, have a game of tenpin bowl, join in the beach volleyball or visit the water slide just around the corner from Hervey bay Colonial Lodge. Early risers can join in the Tai Chi at Torquay Beach Park at 7 AM.

WetSide Water Park is Now Open

Hervey Bay's newest Water Park opened in December 2009.

The water park features hundreds of spouts and jets, fountains interactive play equipment, water slides, surfing, special play area for under-5’s called TotSide, tipping buckets, music and a giant water screen. The site also includes a coffee shop, viewing decks and boardwalks, educational displays, amenities blocks and the pay-per-use Board Rider wave machine.

Entry into WetSide is free and it is open 7 days a week from 9 AM (12 noon on Mondays). More information.

Fishing and Boating

A major pastime in Hervey Bay - from the beach, off the amazing Urangan Pier, hire boat or organised trips into the bay or beyond - fishing while in Hervey is a must. Whiting are caught off Shelly Beach just 75m from Hervey bay Colonial Lodge.

Keen anglers and casual fishermen pack your rods and handlines - the fish are waiting for you. Sailing or cruising is just magic in this undiscovered Paradise where Nature is King. Dugong, turtles, dolphins, sea eagles, pelicans and other creatures share these unique and peaceful anchorages where you can truly unwind.

For boating there are many options are available including fishing boats for hire, kayaks, glass bottom kayak tours as well as jet-skis, canoes, sailboards and catamarans. You can also hire small aluminium runabouts to catch 'the big one' or just enjoy a day on the water. See reception for information on booking any of these activities.

Take a cruise to the outer reef on a glass bottom boat for coral viewing, search for dolphins and turtles, snorkel in the calm waters and enjoy a BBQ lunch on deserted Round Island - just perfect!

Also available is a cruise up the West Coast of Fraser Island (approx Nov - Mar). Visit Sandy Cape Lighthouse, kayak and snorkel at Wathumba Creek, spot a dolphin or turtle, beach fishing, swimming and lunch included. Contact reception for further details
